FN 509 Midsize

Introduced by FN America at the end 2018, the FN 509 Midsize (more commonly called the FN 509M) is a mid-sized version of the popular 509 series. While the standard 509 received rave reviews from customers, some customer feedback indicated that the standard 509 was just a little big for concealed carry. FN took those suggestions to heart and introduced the slightly smaller FN 509 Midsize.

The 509 M features the slide from the standard 509 series mated to a frame with a slightly shorter and more compact grip. The shorter grip means that the 509 Midsize model features a 15-round magazine (or optional 10 rounder for restrictive states) compared to the 17-round magazine on the standard FN 509. While the shooter loses 2 rounds in overall capacity, that equates to nearly a 2” reduction in grip. This shorter grip makes the 509 M version much easier to conceal compared to the full size 509 models.

The 509 Midsize features all the operation controls and fire controls of the standard 509 and includes all the performance features such as combat sights, loader chamber indicator, front and rear cocking serrations. Also, like the standard 509 models, the 509 Midsize model features an integrated 1913 picatinny rail for accessories, and interchangeable backstraps.

As mentioned before, the 509 M model ships with two (2) 15 round magazines or two (2) 10 round magazines for capacity restrictive states. However, the 509 Midsize model is also backwards compatible with the longer 17 round magazines from the standard 509 or the 24 round magazines from the FN 509 Tactical model, with the use of appropriate magazine grip sleeve (available from FN America).

In addition to keeping all the popular features from the base 509, FN engineers also incorporated a few design changes including:

  • A slight change in the contouring around the magazine release button to allow for easier activation
  • A textured slide stop lever that offers better engagement
  • A flatter faced trigger for better trigger control

Here are some of the more commonly asked questions that we’ve seen regarding FN 509 midsize holsters:
