If you're in the market for a great pair of affordable shooting glasses or need prescription glasses to shoot, you'll definitely want to check these out.

This is the ESS Interchangeable Component Eyeshield system or "ICE" for short. It's a complete high performance component based eyewear set-up designed for high intensity eye defense in any light conditions. It's also one of the best eyewear systems Ed and I have come across yet at a great price. If you are a smaller person, teenager or need shooting glasses for a child, you might want to check out the new ESS Naro Shooting Glasses, which are designed for a smaller head.

The system comes with a set of three (3) interchangeable 2.4mm high-impact polycarbonate lenses. The lenses come in Smoke Gray, Hi-Def Yellow, and Clear for use in any light conditions. All 3 lenses offer 100% UVA/UVB protection and are 100% ANSI Z87.1 & OSHA standards compliant.

The lenses are designed with a high level of anti-frangmentation protection, so they can withstand a 12 gauge shotgun blast of #6 shot from 30 feet. It’s the only eyeshield on the market today that passes the military's rigorous .15 caliber ballistic impact test (MIL-PRF-31013).

The frameless ESS ICE design allows for an unlimited field of view. The adjustable temples can be made longer or shorter, and have custom fit ear bends to fit any user. The lenses are setup for quick change. The temples and nose pad can quickly be removed and replaced on a different colored lens.

A rugged carrying pouch that comes with:

  • divided lens pockets
  • A belt loop
  • A handy clip attachment
  • An ESS Clear Zone fog repellent cloth
  • Snap-on neck leash

If you need prescription lenses, the ESS ICE may just be what you are looking for. The glasses nosepiece is designed to accept an integrated prescription lens carrier. This unique design allows you to take the optional ESS prescription lens carrier (two different carrier models are available) to your eye care professional, and have them insert your prescription lenses into the carrier. The carrier itself then snaps into place on the nosepiece. As the RX carrier sits behind the lens, it can be used with any of the 3 lenses that come standard on the ESS package.

RX Carriers

The ESS RX carrier comes in two different models:

Wire Frame
(sold separately for $28.00)

Nylon Frame
(sold separately for $28.00)

Features

  • Open lenses (No external frames)
  • Will accommodate prescription corrections from +/- 6
  • Only RX insert authorized for use in the British Army

Features

  • Closed lenses (external frame)
  • Extremely durable and rugged
  • Will accommodate prescription corrections from +/- 11
  • Only RX insert authorized for use in the US Army

At the repeated requests of customers, ESS has released a new Polarized set of lenses in the smoke gray color. Please note that the polarization process affects the impact resistance of the lenses so the Polarized lenses are NOT IMPACT RESISTANT like the other ESS lenses. The polarized lenses are designed to be worn during other activities where shooting is not involved. The polarized lenses can be ordered from the drop down menu below. The polarization process is very expensive and this expense is reflected in the price of the polarized lenses ($110.00).

ESS has also just released a new Rose colored lens. It is not part of the ESS ICE package and can be purchased separately using the "Glasses Options" or "Additional Glasses Options" drop down menus below.

Some commonly asked questions about the ESS ICE shooting glasses:

What does the ESS ICE package come with?

Aside from the smoke gray. clear, and hi-def yellow; are any other lens colors available?

Will the RX inserts work for bi-focals or tri-focals?

What RX insert is best for me?

How do I change the lenses?

How do I mount the RX carrier in the glasses?

Do the RX carriers come with dummy lenses that my eye care professional can use as a lens template or guide?

What kind of warranty do these glasses come with?

Are the lenses polarized?

Can these glasses be worn for any other uses besides shooting?

What does the ESS ICE package come with?

The ESS ICE package comes with:

  • (1) pair of ICE frames
  • (3) different lenses (smoke gray, hi-def yellow, and clear)
  • (1) rugged carrying pouch that comes with: divided lens pockets, belt loop, handy clip attachment, ESS Clear Zone fog repellent cloth, and a snap-on neck leash

Aside from the smoke gray. clear, and hi-def yellow; are any other lens colors available?

Yes, ESS has recently released a Rose colored lens also.

Will the RX inserts work for bi-focals or tri-focals?

Yes and no. It will depend on the required correction (does it exceed the maximum correction level for the RX carrier you selected?), and the type of bi or tri-focal selected. Traditional bi/tri-focals and the newer transitional style bi/tri-focals will work just fine if the correction is within the limits.

What RX insert is best for me?

That's really a decision based on personal preferences, needs, and the needed correction level. If you need a correction level beyond, +/- 6, you'll need to stick with the nylon frame. If you prefer a frameless RX, then the wire carrier is the way to go. If you need something really durable for extreme use, then the nylon carrier is the better choice.

How do I change the lenses?

The lenses are very easy to change and don't require any tools. Start by carefully lifting both arm stems straight up off the lens frame. Next, remove the nosepiece off the lens using a downward wiggling motion. Once you get the trick, the whole operation takes about 10 seconds. Take a look at the diagram below as an example:

How do I mount the RX carrier in the glasses?

The RX carrier comes with a specialized nosepiece to accommodate both the lens and RX carrier. To utilize the RX carrier, simply insert it into the designated slot on the included nosepiece, and then mount the nosepiece up into the lens. It's very easy to insert the RX carrier in or out as needed. Take a look at the diagram below as an example:

Do the RX carriers come with dummy lenses that my eye care professional can use as a lens template or guide?

The wire RX carrier comes with dummy lenses that can be used as a lens template. The new nylon RX carrier does not have dummy lens inserts, but your eye care professional can use the outline of the RX carrier as a template.

What kind of warranty do these glasses come with?

In addition to our 45 day money back guarantee, the ESS glasses come with a manufacturer's warranty of 1 year from the date of purchase. This warranty only covers manufacturers defects.

Are the lenses polarized?

No, the standard ESS lenses are not polarized, and here's why: The polarization process somewhat degrades the lens strength and impact resistance rating. Although polarization is a nice benefit, the manufacturer did not feel that it was worth the risk to sacrificing the strength and integrity of the lens. ESS does offer a special polarized lens in the smoke gray color. However, the polarized lens is not a safety lenses like the other ESS lenses and is not designed for shooting.

Can these glasses be worn for any other uses besides shooting?

Absolutely. They have a number of uses in addition to shooting:

  • They can worn as everyday sunglasses (including prescription sunglasses)
  • Worn as safety glasses when needed
  • Protective eyewear for motorcycling

In reality, you can pretty much wear them for anything. The list is really endless.

NOTE - The glasses themselves are covered under our 45 day money back guarantee. However, if you purchase a set of the RX carriers and have an eye care professional insert a set of prescription lenses in either the wire or the nylon RX carrier, they are not covered under our 45 day money back guarantee; and are non-refundable.

After extensive evaluation, comparable product comparison, and personal use; we are extremely impressed with the price and quality of the ESS ICE line. We are especially taken with the RX carrier integration as it provides an easy and cost-effective solution for shooters that require prescription lenses. Overall we found the ESS ICE system to be an excellent performer and value, especially when compared to similar shooting eyewear on the market today.

NOTE - We are currently out of stock on the ESS 2.4 glasses. We still have some Naro models in stock, and have more of the 2.4 models on order. As soon as they arrive, we'll update the website.
