The Taurus Model 85 revolver is a concealable handgun that comes in either a .38 Special or a .38 Special +P caliber. This small frame revolver features both a double and single-action trigger except for the 85CHULT model which is a double-action trigger only due to the concealed hammer.
It measures 1.346 inches in width, has a length of 4.28 inches and weighs 0.793 kilograms with either a 2" or 3" barrel. The revolver comes in different sub-models that vary in features such as the grip, the material and the finish. This revolver model comes in models equipped with exposed, bobbed, or shrouded hammers.
It has two distinctive features that include the Taurus Security System (TSS) and the transfer bar. The Taurus Security System is a lock and key device made of a quarter-turn style socket-head screw that enables the user to lock the revolver so the trigger, safety and hammer cannot be moved. The transfer bar is used to prevent the hammer from striking the firing pin unless the trigger is fully pulled to the rear. The side plate is made of thermoplastic poly-carbonate that allows a shooter to be able to see the inner workings of the handgun.
With the exception of the model 856, all Taurus 85 models wear/are designed as 5 shots. The Model 856 features an additional round in the cylinder to bring the capacity to 6 rounds. It has fixed rear sights with fiber optic front sights. The grip is made of rubber although some models come with grips made of wood or pearl.
The gun owes its design and features to the popular Smith & Wesson Model 38/49 Bodyguard series of revolvers with the big difference being that the Taurus Model 85 uses a shrouded ejector rod. Like the popular S&W J frame revolver designs, the Model 85 was designed either as a backup or deep concealed carry gun.
This model is available in several configurations that include stainless steel, blued steel and ultra-lite variants that are constructed from aluminum and titanium with steel lock-work components.
The gun is manufactured in Brazil by Taurus International and was first used by the patrolling officers of the Singapore Police Force.
Any holster listed below is produced in a model to fit the Taurus 85 series.
