Your daily carry setup is really only as good as the gear you use. When it comes to finding a dependable S&W 586 L Comp holster, comfort and functionality are non-negotiable. Whether you're at the range or carrying concealed, the right holster makes all the difference.
Before we go over all the holster options we carry for this S&W revolver, let’s discuss this wheel gun in more depth:
Introduced by S&W in 2017, the 586 L Comp was born in the S&W Performance Center as a high performance L frame revolver designed for competition, defensive shooting, and concealed carry. Chambered in .357 Magnum, the L Comp features a 7-round capacity (like a 586 Plus) mated to a 3-inch barrel with the proprietary L Comp compensator.
Coming from the Performance Center, this revolver features a tuned action with chamfered cylinder loading ports and a tritium front sight for low-light performance.
Since the 586 l comp differs from a traditional S&W 586, those differences play a role in the holster fit. The differences include the following:
To accommodate these differences on a holster level, the L Comp version generally requires a gun holster that is manufactured to that revolver’s specific dimensions.
Through MTR Custom, we can offer premium leather holsters to fit the 586 L-Comp. Our top-selling holster models for this L frame are outside the waistband models like the MTR Dual Carry, the MTR Slimline Pancake, and the MTR Belt Scabbard.
For IWB options, our top sellers are the MTR Adversary and the MTR Slimline Tuckable.
It’s worth noting that the frame on the L-Comp model is manufactured from carbon steel, making the firearm relatively heavy at 34-35 ounces (unloaded). Due to the weight, you’ll likely want a holster with good attachment support to the gun belt.
Here are some commonly asked questions that we encounter regarding holsters for this S&W model:
Possibly, but it depends on the gun mold used by the holster manufacturer. If the mold does not include a full barrel lug or account for the repositioned front sight, then it likely won’t fit the L comp. That’s one of the reasons that MTR Custom builds holsters for the L comp off an exact mold of the L-comp revolver.
Given the overall size and weight of that wheel gun, we recommend an outside the waistband holster that mounts directly to the belt with traditional belt slots. Most paddle holsters won’t have enough paddle strength to fully support the weight of this revolver.
Any of the leather holsters displayed below are available in a configuration to fit the S&W 586 L comp with a 3” barrel.
