Are you tired of ill-fitting holsters that don’t accommodate your Smith & Wesson 586 properly? Many generic holsters don’t support revolvers with longer barrels or full-lug frames. Our leather holster options are specifically built for the S&W 586, so you can carry with confidence, comfort, and safety.
Before we get into gun holster specifics, let’s discuss the 586 in more detail:
First introduced in 1981, the S&W 586 was designed as an intermediate revolver option between the K frame and the full-size L frame. Wheel guns were the go-to choice in law enforcement, and several law enforcement agencies were voicing concerns over how the S&W K frame handled full-power .357 Magnum rounds.
In response to those concerns, S&W introduced the 586, which is built on the larger L frame but mated with smaller K frame grips. S&W would manufacture the 586 from 1981 to 1999 and then reintroduce it back into production in 2012.
To date, the 586 has been manufactured in the following standard barrel lengths:
The standard 586 is chambered in .357 Magnum with a 6-round capacity. In 2014, S&W would introduce a 7-shot version of this series called the 586 Plus.
Since 586 is available in several different barrel lengths, it’s carried or used for a wide variety of purposes, including concealed carry, range use, home defense, etc. As such, we sell a variety of holster styles for this model as well.
It’s also worth noting that some holster brands only support holsters for the 586 in specific barrel lengths. For example, Don Hume Leather offers holsters that go up to the 4” version, while another brand we carry, MTR Custom, can do holsters all the way up to the 6” models.
Let’s start with outside the waistband holster options: Our top-selling OWB carry sellers are these models:
If you own multiple 586s in different barrel lengths, consider the MTR Custom Pancake slide or the Don Hume JIT Slide. These open-bottom slide designs are compatible with various 586 configurations.
For inside the waistband carry or concealed carry, our top-selling iwb holster options for this S&W revolver are the following models:
We typically don’t recommend a paddle holster style for the 586 due to the overall weight of the revolver.
Here are some commonly asked questions that we encounter when discussing holsters for the S&W 586:
Yes. Any of the IWB holster models we mentioned above or any listed below are available in configurations to fit a 586 with a 4” barrel. If the 586 is not specifically listed on a holster, you can also order a holster for an S&W L frame with a 4” barrel, as that option will also fit a standard 586.
The example images of the holsters below typically use a semi-automatic handgun in the example pics, as semi-autos are more common than revolvers these days. If you order one of the holsters below for a 586, you’ll receive a holster made to fit the 586 or an L-frame wheel gun.
