    • Sig Sauer P224

    The success of the P229 series for Sig, along with customer feedback, led Sig to release the P224 model in 2012. This model was designed as a subcompact version of the 229 and was initially available in .40 caliber and .357 Sig. The 2012 models were also only available with the DAK trigger system. In late 2013, Sig added a 9mm version, so the P224 is currently available in the same calibers as the P229 (9mm, .40 caliber, and .357 Sig).

    From a size standpoint, the P224 is nearly half an inch shorter than the P229, and weighs 6.6 ounces less. The 9mm version carries 12 +1 while the .40 and .357 Sig carry 10+1. As an added bonus, the standard 229 mags will also fit a P224. However, only the newer versions of those mags will fit so the older P228/P229 that are more than 5 years old, probably won’t fit.

    Sig offered the P224 in 5 different variations, including:

    • P224 SAS – Sig Anti-Snag package with dehorned slide and frame
    • P224 Nickel
    • P224 Equinox – Features a two toned slide with nickel controls
    • P224 Extreme – Comes with the accented Piranha grips
    • P224 Nitron – Uses the standard Sig finish

    The few complaints with the P224 so far has been the smaller grip size being a challenge for shooters with larger hands, coupled with the weight when compared against similarly sized subcompact pistols.

    It appears as though Sig’s target market with this gun was existing Sig P226, P228, or P229 owners who wanted a more compact Sig model to carry that offered all the traditional Sig controls and features.

    Sig opted to discontinue the P224 model at the end of 2015.

    Will a P224 fit in a holster made for a P229?

    Technically, the P224 will fit a holster made for a P229, but you’ll have an inch or so of surplus holster at the end as the 224 has a shorter barrel than the P229.

    Do you carry an IWB holster for the Sig Sauer P224?
