Ruger SR1911 Commander

The Ruger SR911 Fullsize model's success led Ruger to introduce a Commander-sized SR1911 series in 2013. Like the original Colt Commander 1911 series, Ruger opted to follow tradition and built their SR1911 Commander with a 4.25" barrel versus a 4" barrel. Before we dive into Ruger SR1911 Commander holster options, let's quickly go over the background of this model.

Ruger SR1911 Commander Pistol

The SR 1911 Commander model is available in versions chambered in 45 ACP and 9mm. Ruger has yet to offer the Commander in a 10mm variant, but that may be in the works for the future.

The Commander variant (which Ruger officially calls the SR1911 Commander-Style) follows the same operational controls of the full-size Ruger SR1911 and ships with two 7 round magazines. These models were available in a steel frame or stainless steel frame.

In 2015, Ruger introduced a new lightweight variant called the SR1911 Lightweight Commander. This model featured a lightweight aluminum frame mated to a stainless steel slide. Initially, the Lightweight Commander models were only available in 45 ACP, but Ruger later introduced a 9mm version.

Ruger SR1911 Commander Holster Options

The SR1911 Commander-Style pistols work well in several holster configurations, including outside the waistband holsters, inside the waistband holsters, belt holsters, and shoulder holsters.

With the slightly shorter barrel and thin width profile, the Commander is very popular for concealed carry using an IWB holster. Our most popular IWB holster style of this pistol is the IWB holster that attaches to the inside of the waistband using a metal clip.

FAQS

Here are some of the more common questions that we see regarding holsters for the Ruger SR 1911:

Will the Commander-sized version of the SR1911 fit into a holster made for the full size SR1911?

Although the barrel on the Commander-sized pistol is ¾" shorter, it will fit into a holster made for the 5" SR1911 pistol. However, the holster will be about ¾" longer than the pistol.

Do you carry any Ruger sr1911 lightweight commander holster options?

The lightweight SR1911 Commander model is the same size as the standard SR 1911 Commander, so the Lightweight model fits into a holster made for the standard Commander.

Will the SR1911 Commander model fit into a holster made for a Colt Commander?

Since both pistols have the same dimensions and barrel length, the SR 1911 Commander will fit into a holster made for a traditional Colt Commander. It will also fit into any holster made for a 1911 with a 4/14" barrel.

Do you offer any retention holsters for the SR1911 Commander-style 1911?

We do carry some holster models that feature a thumb break (retention strap) for added retention. However, it's essential to be clear on how the 1911 pistol is carried as some holster brands that offer a retention strap are only designed to work with the 1911 being carried with the hammer cocked, while others offer options for the 1911 to be carried with the hammer cocked or uncocked.

All the Don Hume holster options made with a thumb break for the 1911 Commander are built to work with the 1911 carried with the hammer cocked. MTR Custom offers thumb break options for both hammer cocked and hammer uncocked.

Do you carry any holsters for a Ruger Lightweight Caommdner SR1911 in 9mm?

All the Ruger Commander-sized 1911 models are built with the same dimensions regardless of caliber. This means that a 9mm 1911 fits into the same holster made for a 45 ACP 1911.

Any holster listed below will fit a Ruger SR1911 Lightweight Commander in 9mm or .45 ACP.
